What is Plastic Cutlery Mold?
Plastic cutlery mold is a specialized tool used in the manufacturing process of plastic utensils like spoons, forks, and knives. These molds are designed to precisely shape molten plastic into the desired utensil form and are often used in injection molding. They come in various types and sizes to accommodate different designs and production needs.

What Type of Plastic Material is used for Cutlery Molding?
For cutlery, polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) are the most common plastic materials used in injection molding. PP is known for its flexibility, making it suitable for lighter applications like soups and salads, while PS is more cost-effective and suitable for disposable cutlery and other items.
PP material is relatively soft and not easy to break when used, while PS material is easy to break, so the choice of plastic material should be based on the use of the type of plastic to determine the type of plastic.
After determining the plastic material, we will use different shrinkage rate according to the different materials. 1.7% for PP material and 1.05% for PS material, so the choice of material must be determined before making the mold.
Besides, polylactic acid (PLA) can be used for cutlery too, it is known for its biodegradability, good strength, and ease of processing, but it also has limitations like lower heat resistance and brittleness.
Techniques in Cutlery Molds
Plastic disposable cutleries are convenient, cost-effective, lightweight, and easy to use and dispose off. The demand for plastic cutlery is growing globally as it is a cost effective and convenient food packaging solution. The cutlery can be produced by high speed injection machine. The high injection pressure requires the cutlery mold steel has to be with high hardness to get longer mold life. And there require the steel suitable for high polishing to get excellent transparency.
For cutlery mold steel generally are H13, S136, 2344, 2316, quenching material etc. Because the cutlery is fast moving consumer goods, the plastic cutlery mold is commonly made into multi-cavities. The plastic injection cutlery mold shape is designed to be square or round.
Using pin point gate, hot runner system or semi-hot runner. If the cutlery mold designed as square shape, it could use semi-hot runner. The mold processing will need high speed engraving, high speed milling machines etc. Common cutlery molds have two halves. For folding cutlery mold, there need add slides on the mold halves. The folding cutlery molds are more complicated and difficult than common cutlery molds.

Quality Control Processes in Plastic Spoon Mold
We think a good spoon mold design and construction is a key important step for plastic spoon mold manufacturing. To guarantee high quality plastic spoons, we analyze and determine the spoon mold structure from gates, runners, cooling system and ejector system to make sure the best solution are used. Also, we pay more attention to details, such as mold steel, mold base, mold accessories, plastic raw material selection, etc. We always send spoon mold design solution and drawings to customers for approval before tooling start.
Hot Runner or Cold Runner for Cutlery Molds
For cutlery molds, hot runners are generally preferred over cold runners for high-volume production and to minimize waste, especially when considering the overall cost and efficiency. However, the choice depends on production volume, material sensitivity, and specific requirements.
Hot runners eliminate the need for a cold runner, meaning no runner waste is generated, reducing material costs and improving material utilization. By maintaining the molten plastic at a consistent temperature, hot runners allow for faster cooling and solidification, leading to shorter cycle times and increased production volume. But hot runner cutlery molds have a higher initial setup and maintenance cost compared to cold runner molds. To save the cost, we usually use semi-hot runner with 1 tip of pin point gate. This design is economical in production and has good efficiency.
We can also do cold runner cutlery molds according to customer's needs.

Plastic Foldable Spoon Mold Supplier and Maker in China
Foldable cutlery allows the consumption of yogurt, ice cream, jelly, salad, noodles, porridge and other foods on the go. Dessert PP foldable spoon can be used for sweet, foldable dessert spoon is very practical. And the most important is the folding design, the spoon can be placed in the lunch box, that doesn't account for space, so foldable spoon will not only convenient for you but also give you a safe food experience.
As a skilled plastic injection mold company, Micon shows you the process of making foldable cutlery mold, folding spork mold and foldable fork mold.
It is important to know what steel and how many cavities needed. If have no clue, it is better to let us know injection machine parameters, then we can suggest maximum cavities based on the spoon/fork/spork dimension and weight. Plastic cutlery spoons require high yields to generate revenue. Therefore, the mold must ensure long life, short cycle, and product with light weight. We usually use H13, S136 stainless steel, these two materials are high hardness, can guarantee more than one million life.
Another very important thing for foldable spoon mold making is the design. Product design should be reasonable, if some structural cannot be done by injection molding, it must be modified. Also a novel design will be popular in market. Combined with the parameters of the injection molding machine, we give an optimal solution for customers.
Usually we use a 1-point hot runner, and some require more points. Of course, the cost is higher.
Next is the design of the cooling. This is related to the injection cycle. An excellent cooling system can guarantee short cycle and high output. When you are creating a part using molten metal, you need to properly cool the part before removing it from the cavity. Removing the part too soon can change the shape of the part and compromise its structure. Some die casting companies just place a simple cooling circuit in the cavity block to save cost in design and tool manufacturing. We regulate the temperature with very strategic cooling line placement and coverage. On larger more critical projects, additional time is invested in thermal analysis for cooling line optimization. High quality molds not only ensure the quality of injection molded products, but also to provide customers with an important basis for system solutions.
Points Need to Concerned About Plastic Cutlery Molds
-
Knowing the production quantity
Knowing the annual production quantity that customers needed, so we can decide the cavity and the arrangement of mould, usually divided into a round shape and quadrate shape.
-
Considering the runner system
Considering the runner system, if full hot runner, the mould price is higher but less material waste; if semi-hot runner, price is substantial, and material water is more; It all decided by the customer's budget.
-
Choosing the mold steel
Choosing the mold steel, for spoon, fork and knife molds, all need to be machined in high-speed machines, so usually we will choose H13, S136, or 2344 mold steel with HRC45-48, which can be worked on a high-speed machine without problems.
-
The process of mold machining
Plastic cutlery mold design, CNC, wire cutting machine, grinding machine, milling machine, rocker drill machine, high-speed milling, high-speed carved, polishing, and at last spotting mould, all finished, the mould can be tested.
-
Selection of cutlery materials
Customers choose materials according to their needs. Disposable cutlery usually uses PP or PS. If it is foldable cutlery, use PP. Biodegradable cutlery usually uses PLA.
-
Cutlery mold design
The mold design of cutlery needs to pay attention to the wall thickness and injection gate of the product. The flow channel needs to be balanced. Secondly, the cooling and exhaust system need to be checked.
